10/18/2010 - Police seek local driver who led high-speed chase

Durango police are looking for 20-year-old Durango resident Edward John Toro Jr., the suspected driver of a vehicle that led police on a high-speed chase late Friday night. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.  At about 10:48 p.m., an unidentified officer attempted to pull over Toro’s silver Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 200 block of South Camino del Rio for speeding. The police report states that Toro was traveling south with two passengers on Camino del Rio at about 20 miles per hour faster than the 50 mph posted speed limit.  “The vehicle refused to stop and continued driving in a reckless manner, disregarding traffic signs,” Durango Police Sgt. Rita Warfield said Sunday. “The officer attempted to catch up with the vehicle to get the plate number, but the vehicle kept accelerating away from the officer.”  Warfield said the driver nearly lost control a couple of times and at one point drove on the wrong side of the highway through a construction zone, eventually eluding the officer.  The vehicle was found off the road just past Farmington Hill, near C&J Gravel, 27661 U.S. Highway 160, though Toro had fled the scene on foot.  Police located the vehicle’s two other occupants. No charges were filed against the passengers.  Warfield said she did not think drugs or alcohol were involved.  The warrant, which was to be filed today at the La Plata County Courthouse, contains charges for several misdemeanor traffic violations and a felony charge for vehicular eluding of an officer.  Durango police are asking anyone with information about Toro’s whereabouts to call police dispatch at 385-2900, or to make an anonymous tip, call Crimestoppers at 247-1112.
