4/24/2010 - 2 more arrested in home invasion

The Durango Police Department has two additional suspects in custody in connection with an armed home invasion that took place April 14 in Durango. Police at about 10 p.m. Thursday arrested 19-year-old Timothy J. Vaughan at his home. Three hours earlier, a tactical team raided a home at 2015 Delwood Ave. and arrested Rees Beck, 26, of Durango, in connection with the April 14 armed home invasion on New Mexico Drive. Beck is suspected of felony burglary, aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was being held Friday in the La Plata County Jail on $25,000 bail. Vaughan was booked into La Plata County Jail on suspicion of the same charges. Phillip G. Provencio, 22, in jail on a parole violation, was served an arrest warrant Thursday for identical charges stemming from the same April 14 incident. An arrest warrant has been issued for Joseph Poliquin, 32, the fourth suspect in the case. Police say Poliquin is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call 385-2900 and ask to speak to an investigator or call Crime Stoppers at 247-1112 if wishing to remain annonymous.

4/20/2010 - Police, FBI arrest FLC student in connection with Durango bank robberies

Durango police and FBI agents Tuesday arrested a 19-year-old Fort Lewis College student on suspicion of holding up two Durango banks and aborted robberies of two other banks from December 2009 to April. Chase B. Gardner, 19, was arrested without incident at 533 East Sixth Ave., where he lives with roommates, said police Sgt. Dan Shry. Information from Fort Lewis College shows Gardner was a sophomore marketing major. He apparently is from Durango. The arrest triggered a soft lockdown at Park Elementary School, which is across the street from Gardner`s house, Shry said. In a soft lockdown students are gathered at a central location in the school until a perceived threat passes. A tip received by the FBI set law enforcement on Gardner`s trail, Shry said. “We got enough information that he (Gardner) looked good for it," Shry said. Enough evidence was gathered to obtain a search warrant, Shry said. In Gardner`s residence, officers found clothing similar to that worn by a man who entered the four banks as well as one of the notes he passed to tellers instructing them how to handle the money, Shry said. One of Gardner`s roommates was home when he was arrested, Shry said. The incidents for which Gardner was arrested: the robbery of the main branch of the First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St., on Dec. 7, 2009, and Vectra Bank, 1101 East Second Ave., on March 4. Aborted holdups occurred on April 1 at Alpine Bank, 1099 Main Ave., and Bank of Colorado, 1199 Main Ave. Shry declined to say how much money was taken in the holdups. The holdup man received money but it is policy not to publicize the amount, he said. Shry said the bank robber apparently got cold feet at the last two banks because of possible security measures. After the first two holdups, all banks had surveillance photos of the robber. Gardner, who is being held without bail at La Plata County Jail, appeared in federal court Tuesday for an advisement hearing. He is charged with two counts of bank robbery and two counts of attempted bank robbery. His next appearance, a detention and preliminary hearing, is tentatively scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Prosecutors have to present enough evidence to show that crimes were committed and that the suspect was connected to them.
